“Welcome Back!” Convocation Several of our employees have told me today’s convocation for our 1,100 employees may have been the best one ever. What made it special? The school looked wonderful, the breakfast was great as always (Thank you Chartwells!) and the program very similar to the usual. But, there were some special moments: The CHS Army ROTC presented colors; we have just never done that before. A new tradition was born today as it set a very positive tone. Lauren Vaughn, a teacher at Boiling Springs Intermediate, sang a Celine Dion version of “What a Wonderful World” as Rhonda Henderson’s photo montage of last year rolled. That young lady can sing! Our 2013-14 Teacher of the Year, Matt Johnson, was the keynote speaker. His topic? Persistence. His method? Engaging. See the picture of him directing everyone to take a “selfie” with the important person next to them. This was in addition to his hitting the back wall with a Nerf arrow illustrating “purpose.” Boiling Springs High School’s custodial crew was named first place in the “Classic Schools” category of the climate awards. It was the first time they have won in at least ten years, and they were excited; Brenda Hurst ran the aisles! It reminded me of worship services at the Nazarene Church when I was a child…. Finally, in a prearranged event, we called the final door prize “winner” to the podium for a special gift. When Katie Kruger, a teacher from Boiling Springs Elementary made it to the dais, her boyfriend, Brent Atkins, also a teacher at BSES, rose from his seat, approached the stage to the music of “Will You Marry Me?,” got down on one knee and asked. She said, “Yes!” That is what families do. We support one another, celebrate together and share memory-making moments. While we have “promises to keep and miles to go before we sleep,” may this be the best year ever in Spartanburg Two!
