Welcome to the BUSINESS DISTRICT IQ Not Required Perry Klebahn, associate professor at Stanford University, commented, “It’s all about building up your tolerance for risk. Entrepreneurship does not require an IQ. You need to be able to fail, learn, compost, and move forward.” When I first read the above statement, it felt like a putdown. It was like a remake of the book, Entrepreneurship for Dummies. I’m not forced by ego to be smarter than everyone else. It’s a good thing, too. But does not require an IQ? Comparatively speaking, I hope. Entrepreneurs are known for not making it happen the first time. Not all, but a significant number. The goal of entrepreneurship classes and support groups is to maximize the possibility for success. Some start-ups have the wrong product. Others, the wrong market. Some, no plan beyond the store front opening. It is so important for an entrepreneur not to buy into the “lone wolf” idea of business. In order to maximize the possibility of success, aspiring entrepreneurs must avail themselves of support. Many people have been this way before you. Learn from them. Many areas have small groups that meet for mutual support over a long period. They develop a trust and comradeship between each other. They question decisions, actions, and lack of actions. Instead of “fail, die, climb into the compost pile, and rot away,” let’s use all the assets available to “fail, learn, compost, and move forward.” Thank you for reading this note. Forward to a friend. Or a gardener.
