Well, its 10 til 10, Thursday night and Im ready to shut the mic off, pour a libation, fire up a cigar and watch the telly. Busy day! Got totally slammed with spots for my friends at WWE. Unfortunately, around 11:30 this morning, I started seeing bright lights in my peripheral vision. Its a type of migraine, Ive had once before, which is thankfully not painful, but the illusion it causes makes it difficult to see the keys on my keyboard. I worked through it until around 2, then said the hell with it. Got back to it after it went away and managed to pump out spots for 15 markets, a few auto dealer commercials and some stuff for The Cigar Dave Show. Got FedEx verification this afternoon that my beloved vintage 1968 Neumann U87 is safely in the hands of the great Klaus Heyne, at German Masterworks in Corbett, Oregon. It failed the other day, so I had to recruit my Sennheiser 416. It sounds great, paired with my pure API processing, but, theres nothing that sounds like the KLAUS 87, which Herr Heyne modified for me about 12 years ago. He likes to see his mics every several years (I think its been about 8 years, since I last sent it to him for a checkup). I cant wait to see what he does with it. Hes constantly developing new components (hand wound transformers, special capacitors, etc.) and techniques, so I never know what the inside of the mic is going to look like when I get it back from him. Klaus used to tune Steinway pianos BY EAR! He adjusts the capsule, based on what I tell him I want to accentuate, then adds his proprietary parts. I asked him a few years ago if hes grooming an heir apparent, to carry on his wisdom. He answered simply that he has yet to find anyone with his work ethic and attention to detail that he demands. Hes truly amazing. His magic isnt cheap, but its one of the necessities of doing what I do and, hopefully, sounding good.
