Well, that ended things with a bang. Just had a 6.9 earthquake - TopicsExpress

Well, that ended things with a bang. Just had a 6.9 earthquake reported to be 50 miles off shore from Ferndale, which would make it over 75 miles from us. We felt it, though. Downstairs watching TV when the chair started moving under me. Oh, I said to my sweetie, its an earthquake. You could see the flowers on the mantle swaying back and forth as if a gentle breeze had come arisen. The dog was on her way to the kitchen and stopped, mid-stride, as if pointing, and froze in place till the shaking stoped. It lasted about 20 seconds which doesnt sound like a long time, until you are in an earthquake. We usually dont feel the quakes here in Alderpoint. No damage, so I could classify this one as Oh, isnt that interesting? Before the quake I had a presentation on medical marijuana law in Mendocino county at the Laytonville Garden Club, which is in Mendocino county. After a leisurely morning, and a good hot bath, I spent a couple of hours completing my notes for the talk, then called the Alderpoint store and ordered a sandwich. They said they were out of roast beef but had pulled pork. That was wrong, they had tri-tip. Its all meat to me. It was ready when I swung by on my way out of town. I love ordering for pickup, it makes me feel important, or sophisticated, or something. Picking it up is akin to walking into a bar and saying the usual, please. It took about 90 minutes to get to Laytonville, during which time I learned about 3 turning points in the medieval times. King Arthur wins the battle of Mt. Bagen (or something, they dont know where it was), the Moors conquer Spain and set up Al Andalus, Charlemane sets up a schollarly center in Aachen. Did you know hes the reason we have spaces between our words, and periods at the end of sentences? Before him the words all ran together and there were no capital letters or punctuation. King Alfred beat the Danes later, and translated classical texts into Old English. Hes the reason we dont all speak Danish. Laytonville is not very large, but it did take me a couple of minutes to find Harwood Road. The Garden Club is a good sized building, all the more so since there was only one person there when I arrived in the steady rainfall. He had set up 8 chairs, and i thought perhaps he was optomistic. I was about 10 minutes early, and people began to drift in, more chairs were brought out, and in the end about 50 people showed up to hear my presentation. Full house as far as Im concerned. I had a mic and everything. I am a fairly casual public speaker, and I took questions as I went along. Things went nicely, everyone was quite interested in medical marijuana law and the questions were good. I had one person in the audience who knew a lot and didnt mind sharing it, which can be a problem but it was ok. Just ok, but ok. In the end I got 3 new CDs, the promise of another, and one potential client for counseling on patient associations (collectives, they are called). Met the mayor of Willits (running for 3rd district Supervisor), and might end up with a show on KZYX concerning marijuana. They took up a collection to pay for the hall, and my gas. I got $98, which was a real bonus since I probably would have rented the hall myself, had I known 50 people would show up. I really miss speaking in public. Lawyers know so much and can reveal so little. So it was a big success, then we had an earthquake. A very pleasant day. Tomorrow I go to Eureka for a 3rd year follow up on my cancer treatment. Tonight, I go to sleep. Good night all, if an aftershock comes may it rock you gently in your dreams. Sleep tight, but not right under a picture hanging on the wall.
