Went to the COSI 50th anniversary gala last night. Fun party! In honor of the celebration, the Columbus Historical Society built a replica of the old elevator that took visitors down to the Jeffrey Coal Mine exhibit in the basement of the old COSI building on Broad Street. I first visited the coal mine when I was in second grade, with my Brownie troop. We rode down the elevator and explored the mine, then the COSI guide said, We brought you down here in the elevator, but you are going to have to walk back up! Decked out in our complete Brownie outfits -- beanies, knee socks and sashes -- we all panicked and started crying. We honestly thought that elevator had taken us to the center of the earth. When the walk upstairs was only one short staircase, our little minds were blown. (For those of you who never experienced it, the walls outside the elevator were on rollers, and moved, while the elevator shook and rattled a bit, making you think you were moving. In fact, the elevator was just a passageway on level ground into the exhibit). This is the kind of super cool stuff that COSI has been doing for 50 years. Blowing little kids minds, every day, and teaching them all kinds of fun stuff. If you havent visited lately, you should. And drop some money in the donation box on your way out. #1 Science Museum in the country, right here in CBus!
