What Are You Looking At? If you or I were in trouble, why would - TopicsExpress

What Are You Looking At? If you or I were in trouble, why would we look to a bunch of hills for our answer? Listen to Psalm 121:1-2 “I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help. My help cometh from the LORD which made heaven and earth.” Clearly, David is using the Hebraic form of poetry that captures the idea of someone or something bigger than he is that he will look to. So, we can see that, when he says in v. 1, he will lift up his eyes to “the hills,” he is referring to the LORD, v. 2, who made the heaven and the earth. We’re so busy searching out the answer to our problems on the mundane, low level of that which we can grasp, without trying very hard to look to the Lord’s Word in faith. But David takes the more difficult path. Notice that he needs help in v. 2 and what does he WILL “to do” when he is faced with something that is greater than he is? He says in v. 1 at the beginning, I WILL lift up mine eyes unto the hills. It’s easy to let someone else take care of your problem…just turn it over to them. It’s easy to drop a pill down your throat without giving any assertive, engagement of the will. We just don’t think about it. But God made David (and you and I) to engage the problem with Him. And so, David WILLS to “lift up his eyes” unto the “hills”. David TAKES HOLD of the source of his help by directing his eyes or his attention to that which will deliver him. Deliverance always starts right away when we trust the Lord and react to His Word. You and I need to exercise the patience that will sooner or later allow us to see or experience the deliverance. Lastly, in v. 2, David says that his help comes from the Lord. Well, it is the Lord who takes the place of the hills in v. 1 whom David says at the end of v. 2 is the one who made heaven & earth. In other words, whatever kind of help you need, God has already created it, He owns it and is willing to share it with you, the believer. Now, be honest. Your flesh wants the easy route….the quick way, the non engagement way out. Doesn’t it? But the Lord is calling us to share with Him in this act of willing faith that directs our eyes or attention to that which is higher than we are. (Hills = the Lord) This requires, of course, the foundation of God’s Word as a springboard from which we are immediately and habitually able to look to the hills. Seriously attending Messiah Reformed Church is a primary way of illuminating that in your life. Welcome to worship this morning! Your co-traveler to the hills, Dr. Birks
