What I am about to say stems from a conversation, yesterday. I was asked by someone, What do you think of what Snowden did? Before responding, I considered the essence of what he did. I excluded all subjectivity. I eliminated the impact of his choice. And, I got objective, real quick. My response? If IT people had a professional organization, like Doctors and Lawyers, Ed Snowden would have violated the first rule of such an organization: Keep your customers secrets. Now, he can never be trusted. He violated the trust that existed between himself and his customers. When I found things that seemed questionable, I reported them using the appropriate chains of command. I did not go to the Press. Ed Snowden, it has been reported, worked his way to where he was for the purpose of doing what he did. He is what I call a Badwolf, an allusion to the Big Bad Wolf in the story, Little Red Riding Hood. He dressed up in IT clothing and violated that trust. His choice was flawed because he violated another rule of Craft Information Systems: Before going after something advanced (like changing society), he did not master the basics (like keeping secrets). He is violating another rule of Craft Information Systems, Dont assume that a compliment means you know what you are doing. An entire antiwestern community surrounds him, giving him compliments, now. He violated another rule, Keep all powers of commmunication, while under pressure. He put pressure on himself and panicked because his mind could not comprehend the nature of what he learned. I suspect his knowledge of history of communism has gaps. He violated Craft Information Systems rule that has to do with customer service,Distinguish between good and bad service, so your customers will come back. Snowden violated another rule of Craft Information Systems, You are only as good as your last support call or project. Pissing off your last set of customers and aiding the enemy is probably not a good way to end a career. What do I think of what Snowden did? He has permanently damaged Craft Information Systems, in an Historic way. I think that he ended his IT career and made himself a target for bullet. Id be the first in line to end his life.
