What I have done since June and the Senate Session ended??? Did I say Ended??? I have visited 3 Department of Social Services Offices and made visits to the employees delivering donuts and letting them know that we appreciate them and to “hang in there” we are working to make things better. (more to come) I have attended several DSS hearings across the State just to see how they are handled from the perspective of Foster Parents, to Grandparents rights to Parental Rights. I spoke to SC Girl’s State I spoke to a Leadership Panel at Probation Pardon and Parole I toured the Babcock Center in Lexington County and several of their independent living facilities I attended and walked in the Lexington County Peach Festival Parade & the Chapin Labor Day Parade I did countless tours for groups at the Statehouse (for my constituents to others who just asked me to) I attended two conferences on Child Welfare one in Little Rock Arkansas and one in St. Paul, Minnesota I spoke to the SC Homebuilders Self Insured Fund I spoke to the Palmetto AgriBusiness Board I’ve talked to people who want to run for office, want to be appointed, think they want to run for office or think they want to be appointed. I met with the Girl Scouts at Saluda Shoals Park for Summer Safari I have met with every constituent who called and asked for a meeting. We also had 2 (I think just 2) DSS Sub-committee meetings We are getting ready to start sub-committee meetings across the state for the Mobile vet lab bill and I am also on that sub-committee. My Office has helped countless people from across this state with issues concerning child welfare – not just Lexington County – Thank God for a Wonderful Staff! I have the best!!! Oh and sometime in there I attended Darden School of Business in Virginia for Emerging Leaders, I graduated from my USC Education Fellowship Program, I spent a weekend in Atlanta at a wedding and one in Savannah with my husband! (It was about time) I am sure I have left about 200 things out but these are just the ones off the top of my head. The reason I am telling you all this is because I just read somewhere about what Legislators are paid. Well here is my take on that. Yes, the legislative session is from January till June and we only meet Tuesday – Thursday (technically). Constituent issues are January 1st – December 31st and are Monday thru Sunday at least where I am. I am certainly not complaining but don’t tell me what we make an hour because I can’t divide a number that small. I love my job and I love helping people and I will work harder than anyone else to do it and do it right but don’t talk about me and expect me not to defend myself and the rest of those who work hard. And don’t get me wrong I know not everyone works hard! I knew what the job paid when I ran - so dont go there either! Oh and by the way….those trips I take across the state are paid for out of my pocket – not reimbursed by tax dollars!
