What I love most about life is finding wonder and beauty in unexpected places. Walked down to the local pub last night to watch the Seahawks game. Tim went out to have a smoke and met a young man somewhere in his mid to late twenties, standing outside watching the game through the window. He shared his cigarettes with him and then invited him in to sit at our table, have a beer and watch the game. His name was Joe, and as it turns out he was staying down by the lake in the homeless camp. As we talked it became obvious that he had some developmental challenges, and he had an almost childlike innocence about him, but there was also an unrest and an unease just below the surface. He stayed with us for about an hour, then startled us by suddenly grabbed his backpack and frantically digging through it and pulling out odds and ends of origami paper, socks, stickers and old glue sticks. He spent the next 45 minutes meticulously folding me this beautiful flower (an iris, my favorite) and a seahawk that really flaps his wings, then thanked us profusely, kissed my hand and disappeared out the door.
