What I remember best from my commencement ceremony last June was - TopicsExpress

What I remember best from my commencement ceremony last June was when Melinda Gates told us, In the course of your lives, without any plan on your part, youll come to see suffering that will break your heart. When it happens, and it will, dont turn away from it; turn toward it. That is the moment when change is born. I think thats a beautiful sentiment and a really important point. Its also hard to do, Ive found. Sometimes when I see someone in need in the subway or on the street, not just in need of money but of love, and I dont feel able to helping them, I literally look away. I pretend I havent noticed them, and hope they dont notice me. And it kills me, because I know thats not what Jesus would do. The bit from Melinda reminds me of how in the Book of Mormon, Nephi says he saw many afflictions in the course of his days. I hear him saying that he saw suffering, but didnt look away. I think this is a really important thing for us to learn in this life. Anyway, heres the video that got me thinking about all of this tonight: https://youtube/watch?v=QNJmg4pwLBQ&list=UUGaVdbSav8xWuFWTadK6loA
