What a pity this article misses the backstory - the fact that this 200-year conflict was really precipitated by the American-Philippine govts; who resettled people to Mindanao under the Homestead Act, in the process marginalising an autonomous group of people. Justice can take a long time under democracy. Maybe its the lack of principled political engagement that divides populations into extortionary schools of thought. Scepticism is rather convenient when you have the numbers or the greater fire power. So why now? Maybe its because the Philippines govt has lost all credibility, with its Supreme Court Chief Justice impeached with $50mil found in his 11 bank accounts and 35 politicians implicated in a huge kickback scandal.
