What are goals? Does anybody really know? We always say that - TopicsExpress

What are goals? Does anybody really know? We always say that were goal-oriented and that our clients goals are our #1 priority but Id argue that most trainers dont have the slightest clue what a goal actually is. A goal is not to lose 10lbs and its not to bench press 2 plates (unless youre a professional powerlifter). A goal is not to eat well 6 days of the week and cheat on the 7th. Whether youre religious or not I promise thats not what our bodies were created to do. Rest does not involve taking in as much junk as possible to satisfy us for another 6 days. A goal is a reason for action. Its emotional and its meaningful. Goals dictate why we get out of bed in the morning and (hopefully) lie back down at night with a smile on our face. Nobody smiles because they lost 10lbs. They smile because of what that 10lbs represents. It may mean that person A can fit into the flowing red dress that she wore on her honeymoon cruise to the Caribbean with her husband again. 10lbs may also mean that person B has the confidence to introduce themselves to that beautiful stranger who always seems to be ordering a cappuccino from your favorite coffee shop and flashes you a smile. A great coach recognizes the emotional reasons behind goals and uses that for the impetus for their program. They involve these goals in their explanations, their cues, and their follow-up evaluation. Emotion drives action -- 10lbs doesnt.
