What do you reckon... Sounds like WA Latest IPCC Report Damning. SBCT Says Queensland Media Must Tackle Climate Change and Qld Coal Exports. Its Time for Queenslands mainstream media to come out of the coal closet. Silence is consent. Activist Group Stop Brisbane Coal Trains has today called on Queensland Media to step up to the plate and confront the subject of Queensland Coal Exports and Climate Change. Up to now, the mainstream media has largely remained mute regarding Queenslands burgeoning coal exports and their global Climate Change inducing consequences said SBCT spokesperson John Gordon. With very, very few exceptions, he added. There is an elephant in the room and most of Qld media are running for the exit. Theyve all either gone along for the ride on coal, are gagged, or are too scared to to speak up. We are saying that the time for media heads in the sand is up. Silence is consent. In an era of unequivocal and oncoming climate change, as stipulated in todays IPCC report, the mainstream media in Queensland has to stand up for what is right and make the politicians and the coal industry accountable for their actions. Gordon said he could not recall a single media interview in Qld wherein a senior politician had been challenged about the connection between Qld coal exports and the climate change consequences of that coal being burnt overseas? Its all sweetness and light, he said. Segways and more segways. Queensland is a huge coal exporter. We export around two hundred million tonnes offshore each year and have plans on the table in the Galilee basin that will see this figure explode. If Galilee coal is burnt it will literally cook the world. But it appears our Politicians and Media have developed a strain of selective amnesia when it comes to actually taking some responsibility for our actions. It seems everyone lacks the guts to bite the hand that feeds them. We are calling on all journalists, researchers, editors, producers, presenters - anyone working in the mainstream media in Queensland - to do the right and decent thing. We repeat.. When was the last time that either Premier Campbell Newman, or his trigger happy deputy Jeff Seeney, was asked about the Climate Change consequences of Qld coal exports? When was the last time Newman or Seeney (or any Qld Government pollie for that matter - Ed) were challenged over Queenslands Climate Change responsibility? Anyone?
