“What happened to the Arab spring?” with Noah Feldman – Monday, October 21st On Monday, October 21st, Huron University College will host the 6th annual Derry Lecture. This year, Noah Feldman will speak on “Whats happened to the Arab spring? And why?” The talk will explore the rise and rapid fall of Islamic democracy in Egypt, the disaster of Syria, and the hopes of Tunisia and Libya. This free public lecture will begin at 5:00PM in the Kingsmill Room. Noah Feldman specializes in constitutional studies, with particular emphasis on the relationship between law and religion, constitutional design, and the history of legal theory. The Bemis Professor of International Law at Harvard Law School, he is also a contributing writer for the New York Times Magazine and a columnist for Bloomberg View. He received his A.B. summa cum laude in Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations from Harvard University in 1992. Selected as a Rhodes Scholar, he earned a D.Phil. in Islamic Thought from Oxford University in 1994. He received his J.D. from Yale Law School in 1997, serving as Book Reviews Editor of the Yale Law Journal. He is the author of six books, including the acclaimed Scorpions: The Battles and Triumphs of FDR’s Great Justices (2010) has won several awards to date. The talk begins at 5:00PM in the Kingsmill Room. Free parking is available in the main Huron parking lot (south side of the College). All are welcome! The Derry Lectures are an annual event at Huron University College, generously supported by Margaret and Douglas Derry through the endowment they established for this lecture series. The lectures, which are free and open to the public, illuminate the ways in which various disciplines intersect with and influence one another.
