What is Periodontal disease? Is an infection that threatens the health of your smile and can affect your general health. Also known as gum disease, periodontal disease is caused by the bacteria that live in plaque. When plaque accumulates on your teeth, your gums can become irritated and inflamed. These oral bacteria infect the gums and underlying oral structures. Dr. Ariz, our periodontist in Brentwood, offers a variety of periodontal treatments to help restore your oral health and preserve the function and stability of your smile. Dr. Ariz, may recommend periodontal treatments if you have any symptoms of gum disease. Symptoms can include chronic bad breath, gums that appear puffy or swollen, red gums, gums that bleed easily especially when brushed or flossed, and teeth that look longer than usual or that seem to be loose. Dr. Ariz will perform an examination to measure the spaces between your teeth and gums, or periodontal pockets. Deep periodontal pockets, which indicate the presence of gum disease, can be difficult to clean and can increase the risk of further damage, such as tooth or bone loss. Treatment recommendations will be based on the identified stage of gum disease. Here is an Animation video of Progression of Gum Disease! youtu.be/pquZK5XMcTQ
