What is the best way to stop sin? Answer: Stop sinning. We cannot control other people’s behavior. To tell another to stop sinning, is almost an exercise in futility. The best way to help them stop… is to show them, by stopping in your own life (or showing/telling “how” you did so). To attempt to get/make another stop sinning, is akin to stopping tooth decay in his mouth. You can remove all sweets from his diet, but he will sneak sweets. Even if he does not, certain foods turn into sugar… like crackers and bread. You can remove sugar (and some acid as well), but there are natural sugars as well – such as those found in fruit and juices. Of course, there is also the issue of brushing and flossing. You can instruct. You can “guide”. You can give pointers on how to have a better chance of success with keeping your teeth and not having to have repairs to them… but are you going to actually brush someone else’s teeth? How about flossing? (I was once told by my dentist “you don’t have to floss all your teeth”. I was surprised. She then followed with “only the ones you want to keep” :-) ) So too, I submit that none of us can make someone stop sinning. Everyone… has one God-given gift: freedom. Our choice… is how we’re going to use our freedom.
