What is the role of individuality in transhumanism? Theres a surprising amount of speculation on the idea that one day, humanity and society will evolve sufficiently that most consciousness will merge, in the event of the Singularity. But what are the consequences of such a merge? What would the pros and cons be? Is the sense of self lost in any part of this process? If so, can it be retained or reclaimed? How? What could the consequences be for choosing not to participate? Or to leave at some point in the future? How would the larger entity respond? Im not aware of any speculation on these ideas. Personally, I place value in my sense of self. The thought of losing that is pretty intimidating to me. I cant help but be curious, though. Id even call myself receptive to the notion, whatever the circumstances might be. Does anyone else have any thoughts? Opinions? Predictions or comments? Id be very interested in a discussion on the matter.
