When Eden was a baby, I had always assumed that when she started going to school, Id be concerned with things like, will she get good grades, or will she make friends? I never thought Id begin the school year hoping there wouldnt be any shootings, stabbings, or abductions, which I did for the first time this year. This incident occurred in Edens school. The girl is Edens age. It could very well have been Eden who was targeted. This man had obviously been observing this girl for a while. Read the note; its chilling. As much as I try not to, I cant hep but think about what wouldve happened if they hadnt stopped him in time. Fortunately, this girl knew the mans behavior was inappropriate and informed the teacher. A sign of good parenting. Because, in the end, this is our best defense: educating our children about dangers such as these. As much as wed like to, we cant hold their hands forever, ready to fend off the monsters. Eventually, they have to venture into the dark and scary forest that is the world alone. Christine and I have had this talk with Eden before, years ago. She understands, and I feel confident that she would react the same way this girl did. But this particular monster was in her own backyard, and I know thatll frighten her when we discuss it later tonight. This is the part of parenting they dont prepare you for, when you have to all but destroy a childs innocent perception of the world by telling them that monsters are real, and they want to hurt you. But better she knows theyre real and how to avoid them than pretend they only exist in movies and books.
