When I got home from Calgary late last night, I had a message from one of my neighbors saying they had found an injured hawk in their backyard and had just managed to save it from marauding cats. It was a juvenile Merlin. They had taken it to the local vet who told them they dont treat wild birds. Knowing my interest in birds they called me. I told them they should contact the local Fish and wildlife Office or the Alberta Birds of Prey Center first thing in the morning. They didnt relish the idea of keeping the bird overnight and had to work in the morning so they asked if I would do it. Since I am retired, I didnt mind taking on the job. Here it is waiting for word from the Birds of prey Center on how to proceed. In the meantime it is happily eating raw chicken and drinking lots of water.
