When I teach about space, I ask my students how many of them have seen a shuttle or rocket launch first-hand. Typically, less than half have gone to see a launch. (the launch site is just a 40 minute drive from the school) I think that we take space launch capability for granted because we have been doing it (mostly) successfully for over 40 years. It is a complex endeavor, and has little room to recover from faults. The video below just happened today in Russia. Pretty amazing to watch. npr.org/blogs/thetwo-way/2013/07/02/197988082/baikonour-we-have-a-problem-russian-rocket-crashes-and-burns?ft=1&f=1001&sc=tw&utm_source=twitterfeed&utm_medium=twitter
