When I was 21-years-old I went with a group of OSU students to Washington, D.C. who were protesting President Reagans budget cuts and arms build up. Among the speakers at the rally on the mall was Sen. Ted Kennedy who lambasted the president for his policies, including his attacks on civil rights. After his speech Kennedy waded through the adoring crowd shaking hands. However, after giving a traditional hand shake to all the white guys next to me, he grabbed my hand and gave me a soul shake. He even made a quick black power gesture with his fist! It was like something out of a Saturday Night Live skit. I didnt know whether to be insulted or humored by it. Thirty-three years later, I still dont.
