When I was a small kid in the 1980s, money was extremely tight for my mom and grandmom. However, on occasion we would splurge a little and go down to The Deuce (42nd Street/Times Square) in Manhattan to take in a movie. Yes, they still showed legitimate picture shows on Times Square in the 80s. These were mostly old Spanish language comedy films, from Mexican actors like Cantinflas or Resortes and what not. On those days wed pass by this tiny, grimy little hole in the wall - embedded into one of the crumbling theatres - where my mom would treat me to a meat pattie, which I would eat at the formica counter along with a small paper cup of grape or orange drink from the fountain/coolers on the counter. These were large glass boxes, with a jet inside that continuously gushed up the liquid and kept it refrigerated. I still remember being entranced by the ornate, but rusting, marquees of the old theatres and the blinking incandescent bulbs, visible through the sign-clutttered and smeared glass while I munched on my pattie. The counter was always busy and the little space was always full, so obviously we could never linger for a long time. Today I pay a little homage to you, the Grand Luncheonette. Thank you for the patties. :) https://youtube/watch?v=KB-K9kBAgoY
