When my Aunt Miriam was killed almost 26 years ago, I sat down at my piano and started to write. With the loss of Aunt Karen last night, I didnt feel compelled to write. Martina McBride already has the perfect song for cancer victims and their families. What Ive witnessed over the past four years since my aunts initial diagnosis with cancer, is beyond describable. Her siblings, their spouses, my grandma, her boys and daughters in law, cousins, friends...everyone stepping up to help. To help care for her, clean her house, make her meals, drive her to doctor appointments, sit with her day after day after surgery, after treatments. Unwavering, not giving a thought as to what needed to be done. Some family able to be there physically, others offering support from afar. The caregivers. The unspoken heroes. Aunt Karen had to have a portion of her system removed, leaving a tremendous amount for her and her caregivers to learn to cope with, care for, and she, to live with it daily for over 4 years. This song represents the unconditional love, the amazing support, the unbelievable sacrifices that were made to ensure Aunt Karen was comfortable, felt loved, and was able to carry on as normal as possible. I changed some of the words to fit. Instead of husband, it was sisters, brothers, sons who were there day after day. I have so much respect and a deepened love for my mom and her family. You loved her through it to the very end.
