When my kids were small we did not live by family. I wanted the boys to have seniors in their lives, so we used to adopt a Grandparent from a senior citizen group wherever we lived. It gave my kids interaction with seniors and my kids were able to bring happiness to someone without family near by. It was a win win situation. It also allowed my kids to get an understanding of life cycles as well.
