When researching information about IC, please be sure to check the date, of both the actual research, and the publication date. There has been a pretty big shift in the way IC is diagnosed and treated in recent years. Some significant changes? 1) Diet has been proven to be an IC symptom trigger, and in some cases, has contributed to the condition itself. In the case of gluten sensitive patients, many who have up gluten have had symptoms resolve. 2) The way IC is diagnosed has changed. It is no longer absolutely necessary to have a hydrodistention and cystoscopy to look at the inside of the bladder; and, the potassium sensitivity test should NOT be done routinely for IC diagnosis. It is invasive, painful, and can provoke long-lasting flares. 3) The first line treatments include many of the suggestions I mention in The Better Bladder Book: pelvic floor PT, stress reduction, gentle exercise like yoga, anti-inflammatory diet, sufficient hydration, etc. Always review and take along a copy of the AUA guidelines for diagnosing and treating IC when seeing a new practitioner. Not all of them are up to date. Their reaction to this new information can tell you a lot about their practice. Are they interested? Appreciative? or Argumentative/My Way is the Only Way? Be your own advocate. No one has permission to cause you to have more pain and discomfort. Its your body.
