When something is cheaper, people buy more of it. If the Federal Government lowers the cost of borrowing money to pay for college, more money will be borrowed to pay for college. With more money chasing the same number of seats in colleges, the prices charged by colleges will rise. Then, the Democratic Party will decry the rising cost of college and take further steps to facilitate borrowing to pay for college, thus starting the cycle over again. When I started as a freshman at the University of Texas at Austin in Fall 1981, tuition was $4/hour, and fees added a little over $100 more, so that my total bill for the semester was ~$200. I had a roommate who paid for college by delivering pizza on Friday and Saturday nights for two months each semester. Today, the standard 1-semester tuition and fees for an in-state student at the same school are >$4700. Why do college costs keep rising? Chiefly because the Federal Government keeps pumping money into the market for college education. This is a perpetual-motion election machine; Democrats will continue to exploit this mechanism so long as voters let them.
