Which Soil Are You? God declares in Titus 2:11, “For the grace of God that brings salvation have appeared to all men.” Romans 10:17 teaches, “Faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.” Anyone who has done any gardening knows good soil is required to produce a good plant. Well in Luke 8:5-15, God uses the soil to describe our hearts. Which soil are you? By comparing scripture with scripture, this post will attempt to use the Bible as its own dictionary and commentary to answer this question. The purpose of this post is to encourage everyone to study the Bible -- only there can be sure of truth. The parable of the sower is one of the few parables in which God explains in details. Let us look at this parable. “A sower went out to sow his seed: and as he sowed, (1) some fell by the way side; and it was trodden down, and the fowls of the air devoured it. (2) And some fell upon rocks; and as soon as it was sprung up, it withered away, because it lacked moisture. (3) And some fell among thorns; and the thorns sprang up with it, and choked it. (4) And other fell on good ground, and sprang up, and bare fruit an hundred fold. And when He said these things, He cried, He that has ears to hear, let him hear.” - Luke 8:5-8 Jesus explains this parable to his disciples in Luke 8:11-15. “The seed is the word of God.” And, the soil is our hearts. “(1) Those by the way side are they that hear; then comes the devil, and takes away the word out of their hearts, lest they should believe and be saved. (2) They on the rock are they, which, when they hear, receive the word with joy; and these have no roots, which for a while believe, and in time of temptation fall away. (3) And that which fell among thorns are they, which, when they have heard, go forth, and are choked with cares and riches and pleasures of this life, and bring no fruit to perfection. (4) But that on the good ground are they, which in an honest and good heart, having heard the word, keep it, and bring forth fruit and patience.” Even though Satan obstructed the first seed, the other three seeds were received and acted on by men. However, the correct action that led to salvation was only taken by the man with a good heart. God explains in Ezekiel 11:19-20 that this good heart is given by God. And as a result of being given a good heart, we will have an intense desire to want to know all about God and be obedient. Jesus likewise explains in John 6:44, “No man can come to me, except the Father which have sent me draw him and I will raise him up at the last day.” Therefore, this parable teaches God does 100% of the work of salvation. For Lamentations 3:26 states, “It is good that a man should both hope and quietly wait for the salvation of the Lord.” God also explains in Matthew 7:13-14 that wide is the gate that leads to destruction and many will go there, but narrow is the gate that leads to eternal life and few will find it. “I have planted, Apollos watered; but God gave the increase. So then neither is he that plants anything, neither he that waters; but God that gives the increase.” - 1 Corinthians 3:6-7
