While Kansas slept last night, the Koch - TopicsExpress

While Kansas slept last night, the Koch brothers launched their assault on teachers and public education in the state. Under the cover of darkness the Kansas House began a debate on a conservative education bill that would strip teachers of due process in the case of dismissal, give tax breaks to supporters of private schools, and further decimate public schools in Kansas. This war on teachers is a war on children, and we need to get some folks priorities straight. The Kansas Senate GOP just forced an end to debate, and theres a vote coming up. The House is set to take up the bill in an hour or two. We need to stop this destruction in its tracks. #KochBuysGOP Our Twitterbomb to expose the Koch brothers has begun. Visit here to share the facts. uniteblue.org/KochBuysGOP For those wondering what the Koch brothers have to do with education policy in Kansas, let us reintroduce ALEC . Language from draft legislation and talking points written by ALEC was placed in Kansas legislation verbatim. There are even rumors from legislators and staffers in the Capitol that the Koch brothers were personally present, meeting with moderate Republicans in closed rooms to threaten them with Tea Party primaries. We havent been able to confirm those rumors, and wed expect them to be more discrete, because we do know their network and influence has been exerted shamelessly. Make no mistake: today it is the Koch brothers vs. every schoolteacher and child in Kansas. Tomorrow the Koch brothers may emerge stronger and more confident, ready to continue their war on the middle class at every level in every state. They have the resources, and the Supreme Court continues to unleash their power. Todays events in Kansas are just a microcosm of American democracy after its internal destruction by the Supreme Court. Thanks to the recent McCutcheon decision wealthy donors who can afford to make many donations will have greater influence when it comes to donating to candidates directly. Under the current aggregate limit of $48,600, an individual can max out at 18 federal candidates per cycle. Think of how much more they could give in total if they maxed out at 50 candidates -- or even more. -Sean Sullivan, Washington Post. Since the Supreme Court decided money is speech, it has also become increasingly true that the poor have no voice, and the rich have an outsized influence. The problem is the publics interests arent always aligned with the Koch brothers, as seen from labor rights to renewable energy to protecting our drinking water. Democracy demands that We the People influence the vote and hold our legislators accountable, not just some of the people, but all the people must have a voice in policy. Otherwise we do not have a Democracy, we have a Plutocracy. The American people are not being represented in their government when the #KochBuysGOP, and that is a new and very dark turn our country is taking. Never before in our history has any two people been so determined to attack the very fabric of our country, Democracy itself. Will we let them get away with this? The answer must be a resounding, No! We treasure Democracy, and we will fight for it, because it is our voice, our representation in our government. We cannot ignore this corruption anymore. Nothing is possible until we address it. This is our chance, we have been waiting a long time for this moment to call out the Koch brothers in unison, with one large voice. Wont you join us as we make a big noise for the sake of Democracy itself? Join us now on Twitter and raise your voice using #KochBuysGOP.
