While Northern Cardinals are common all year round on the refuge, if you catch a glimpse of an all red bird in the spring, summer or fall, it just might be a male Summer Tanager. Both the cardinal and tanager like mixed deciduous and pine woodlands, but other than the color red, that’s where the similarity ends. The male summer tanager is the only all-red bird in North America (the female Summer Tanager is mustard-yellow).
