While many of my fellow Civil War enthusiasts were delighted - TopicsExpress

While many of my fellow Civil War enthusiasts were delighted recently with the awarding of the Medal of Honor to Alonzo Cushing, one of many Union Army heroes at Gettysburg, I frankly took little delight in the award myself, knowing that the jaw-dropping heroism of Sgt. Alwyn Cashe continues to be overlooked by the nation for which he died. Lt. Cushing has been dead for 151 years. He has, to my knowledge, no living descendants to even receive his medal. Sgt. Cashes family, friends, and comrades are still with us, still fighting for his memory, still hoping that the last full measure of devotion he gave for his men will not be forgotten. If you do not know his story, learn it.
