While reading a report in the Oregonian about the demographic - TopicsExpress

While reading a report in the Oregonian about the demographic difference between renters and buyers in Portland (oregonlive/front-porch/index.ssf/2013/07/rent_or_buy_housing_survey_sho.html#incart_river) I found my mind wandering to a different question, why do we live in Portland? Whether we own or rent there are as many answers to that question as there are people in the city. For me it’s the combination of family and fun. With so much to do so close by it isn’t a matter of what to do, it’s what to do first! This is how I found myself with my family hiking Oneonta Gorge. Oneonta Gorge is so spectacular that it almost has to be seen to be believed. A hidden gem, just past the overcrowded (for good reason) Multnomah Falls, it’s well worth the stop. Where else will you get to slog down the middle of a stream at the bottom of a slot canyon embedded with ferns and fallen trees? Are there any hikes within 45 minutes of a major city where you can find yourself wading in chest deep, still, icy refreshing, water and at the end have a waterfall tumbling into a perfect swimming hole all to yourself? How often do you get to have your nephew on your shoulders while you wade through a canyon? This hike isn’t for the faint at heart as there is a large log fall with drops and holes to be surmounted before beginning along with pools of cold water but the payoff for the adventurous soul is well worth it.
