While reading about the riots that took place in Argentina in 2001, I learned that there is this notion called "state of siege" ---or "state of emergency" in the U.S. The Argentinian government decided to declare a state of siege after widespread protests due to the crumbling economy. Concerning this state of emergency idea, it is not surprising that the U.S. declared a state of emergency right after 9/11. What I found a little bit surprising is that we are still in state of emergency: Obama extended it in 2012 (whitehouse.gov/the-press-office/2012/09/11/notice-continuation-national-emergency-respect-certain-terrorist-attacks). Now, "state of emergency" is not just a regular English expression ---it has a very specific meaning under the law. It gives certain additional powers to the President. The additional power the President receives can be seen in the original declaration of state of emergency by Bush: presidency.ucsb.edu/ws/?pid=61760.
