While world leaders were meeting in at the UN yesterday for a summit on climate change, the First World Conference on Indigenous People was taking place at the UN Headquarters in New York City on September 22nd and 23rd. An action-oriented Outcome Document has been produced implementing some of the rights of indigenous people. One of those rights (Section 14) specifically outlines the importance of indigenous children in the future of their cultures, We commit ourselves to promoting the right of every indigenous child, in community with members of his or her group, to enjoy his or her own culture, to profess and practise his or her own religion or to use his or her own language.
