Who is Shiva? Shiva is the one who is at the state of Shivam. What is Shivam? Shivam has different meanings, Shivam means supreme, Shivam means nothing. How can something be like this? Let me explain it in a simple way. At the state of supreme there is nothing beyond it or beneath it. It is a static state, Shiva is the one who is at that state. He explains us about the simple truth of the life that “at supreme there is nothing”. That’s why is symbolized as a man who is at very simple state. Further going on through this Shivam also means everything and similarly nothing. It’s hard to explain as Shiva is not an equation but an derivation, we can only derive him by ourselves. He is the question, he is the answer and he is the source to both. When we look at Puranas, Shiva is portrayed in every possible aspect that a man can live, so that we can understand about him. In simple words Shiva is Supreme and “at supreme there is nothing/nothing is at supreme”. Shiva is also portrayed as the god of death and recreation, death is nothing but a beginning. But is death supreme? No, thats it is only an end(Supreme) to our body thats why Shiva has Ash all over his body, to inform us that after our death our body reaches him. But the soul undergoes through the system of Karma based on its deeds, some goes to heaven some to hell. But the pure souls merge with him which is its supreme. To make things much simple, dont learn about Shiva better seek him within. As you are the supreme who hadnt understood his/her might.
