Why you should buy two bottles of Glendronach 12 yr old. Before - TopicsExpress

Why you should buy two bottles of Glendronach 12 yr old. Before I start Id like to say that Im by no means an expert nor am I the kind that will go to a whisky tasting night and talk about if a whisky is smokey oak and creamy or what type of barrel is best and I certainly wont monopolise everyone elses time talking. All I know is a few tricks and tasted some truly great whiskys. I have gone to some yummy whisky tasting nights and learned what I like. That being said here goes: I was given the bottle of 18 year old Glenfiddich which was a great, and treasured, present. I sat down and had a dram (learned that from a lovely whisky night in leura) over the new civilisations: Beyond Earth. As a parent or young kids, one of the few creature comforts I have is to enjoy a few drinks over a computer game. The game was great however I quickly noticed that the Glenfiddich wasnt what Id call great. It was bland and lacking aroma. Something that Id got use to from a few tasting nights. Id brought Glenfiddich before thinking it was a high quality whisky and to be honest it probably is good for the mass market and would make a great gift for the uninitiated. However Id grown beyond that. Enter the Glendronach. During the forced socialisation of another parents kids party myself and one of my whisky night warriors got chatting, as we usually do, about what whiskys weve drinking. My friend mentioned that during a recent trip to Byron Bay theyd tried a great 18 yr old single malt and had actually just brought a bottle of the 15 yr old. We marched out to their car so I could check it out. They mentioned that they got a 12 year old bottle and it was great, well worth the effort. After hearing that I had to get a bottle, so I did what all great men would do: on the way home I told my wife that we need groceries and snuck into our local awesome bottle shop. In the blue mountains we are lucky, our local bottle shop The Leura Cellars (I really do have to tip my hat to them) compete with the mass chains like Dan Murphys and B.W.S. by having a range of obscure drinks rather than the large scale stuff, they are also the ones that do our local whisky nights. After looking through their range I settled on my intended target, the single malt 12yr old Glendronach (AUD$75). As I was purchasing it the staff told me that during the last whisky night (the one I missed) it was mentioned that the 15 yr old (AUD$110) was likely to contain Glendronachs 18 yr old as there was some sort of excess and the 15 could actually be the 18 yr old. As my budget was limited I still went with the 12 yr old. When we got home my wife and I both tried each whisky and we both agree the winner was the Glendronach. The first sniff was a telltale sign. It was richer and the flavour were flavoursome. It was better all round. The price for the 18 yr Glenfiddich at our local was AUD$150 and although it was older it didnt have the same qualities that I associate with a whisky of that price range. The Glenfiddich was no a slouch, as Im writing this Im sipping it, and it still is an ok drink but for the price I found Id be happier buying two bottles of the Glendronach 12 yr old.
