In 1988, Buhari and his first wife Safinatu got divorced. The main reason for the divorce is that the wife went to IBB to plead for Buhari release from detention. The intervention of the then Emir of Katsina could not save the marriage. On 14 January 2006, Safinatu Buhari, the former first lady of Nigeria and Buharis first wife, died from complications of diabetes. Buhari refused to forgive her even in death by refusing to attend her burial.
