Will the Real Mayor of Richfield please stand up! Citizens of Richfield have asked ROS leadership who should I vote for as Mayor of Richfield. It is clear that your choices for the office of Mayor are severely limited. You can vote for the old guard or you can vote for the old-old guard. You are left with the decision as to who might be the lesser of two evils. The candidate for the at-large seat has already been groomed and moneyed by the old guard. You have a choice here though. Still, both candidates could not step up to the plate and deliver an honest response to citizens concerned about development of green space stating that it is a done deal. We find this cowardly and patronizing. But how did it get this way? You might want to look in the mirror. No one in MN has an excuse anymore to skip voting. You could perhaps have a reason such as a life-threatening illness, but no excuse. Vote always, Vote forever! Please dont forget to help those such as the elderly to vote absentee as well! Your Mayor and City Council are paid a mere pittance to perform their work. So what did you expect for a couple of grand? (actually its $10,591 annually with a 3.5 % increase in 2015) Its time for the citizens of Richfield to recognize that this scenario can only lead to cronyism by some of the elected. We do believe several members of our city council to have the interests of the citizens of Richfield first vs. the wishes of a few. You have a voice, use it! Start showing up to City Hall meetings and the various commission meetings. Your presence alone ruffles their feathers. Your vote alone does not constitute participation! The position of Mayor and perhaps City Council members in our opinion should be full time and pay a living wage. In many other democracies this is the norm. They would also have to take a sabbatical from their civilian careers. Only serious candidates need or would apply in our view. So you can lament the lack of choice in candidates or you can start to think about what would be better for my city and my fellow citizens. We only have ourselves to blame and the current candidates are counting on this fact. And this is the good that comes from active participation. There are the few that are willing to stand against government that is self serving. There are those that also scrutinize their documentation which is your right as a citizen. So who is the true patriot? The person who is apathetic and accepts the norm in our current state of politics. Or is it the person who takes up the fight for transparency and honesty. You can sit back and say I voted but that is not enough. You have to stand up in the end.
