William Carvalho and five other players to put Man United back on top Few would debate that Manchester United need a major overhaul this summer, and that will be made ever more complicated by the lack of Champions League football at Old Trafford next season. the club have already spent £35m beefing up the midfield with William Carvalho, so here are other options across the team... Fabio Coentrao Had things worked out differently Coentrao would already be at Old Trafford, after an agreement between Real Madrid and United fell apart at the final hurdle last September. It wouldn’t be a surprise to see David Moyes return for his target in the summer, therefore. Signing him before the World Cup could be a good move, as the left-back has traditionally played his best football with Portugal over the last few years, and his price could rise significantly if he matches expectations in Brazil. Aymeric Laporte United evidently need a new, quality centre-back, but with a scarcity of genuinely world class footballers in that position these days, and without Champions League football to tempt them, it won’t be easy for the Red Devils. One option could be Athletic Bilbao’s excellent young defender Aymeric Laporte, who at 19 already has a good level of experience domestically and a few Europa League games under his belt. With all of the characteristics necessary to become one of the best players in his position, Laporte is expected to play a big part with the French national team in the near future. If Athletic miss out on fourth spot to Sevilla this season, it would be easier for United to convince him a move is worthwhile. Juan Guillermo Cuadrado Persistent rumours suggest United are desperate to sign Fiorentina’s Juan Guillermo Cuadrado, another player the club would be wise to sign ahead of the World Cup, with the Colombian expected to perform well. Capable of playing either as a winger or further back, United are more likely to be interested in him as a Dani Alves style attacking right-back, with Rafael still looking out of his depth against the best teams. Maxime Gonalons A long-term problem position for United is the holding midfielder’s role, which would explain the move for Carvalho. Lyon captain Maxime Gonalons is another candidate to fill that position at Old Trafford. The France international is mobile, aggressive and a tidy passer of the ball, so he ticks a lot of the boxes David Moyes will be looking for in a deep midfielder. Ivan Rakitic United also need a central playmaker, and Ivan Rakitic is arguably the finest playmaker in La Liga this season. Capable of playing equally well as a number 10 or deep in the thick of the midfield, Rakitic has an excellent range of passing, takes excellent set-pieces, scores goals and works hard off the ball. Like Aymeric Laporte, convincing the Sevilla man to come to Old Trafford could hinge on whether his club manages to finish in a Champions League spot at the end of the current La Liga season. So United fans, do you agree with the positions weve highlighted above, and what about the players? Let us know below...
