William Maynard (Ken Maynards father) was a carpenter. At the time - TopicsExpress

William Maynard (Ken Maynards father) was a carpenter. At the time this accounting unfolds, he was employed by Dunlap Construction. William lived on east Seventh Street, close to the Hawcreek. I believe that house was demolished when Central Avenue was built. Last night, I posted the accounts of Ken Maynord being arrested for assaulting Norris Gannon with a knife. As it turns out, William Maynard was also dealing with troubles of his own making. He was on trial, charged with carrying a concealed weapon, threatening Norris Gannon with said weapon, and highway robbery. The trial got underway Monday, November 15, 1915. Initially, William was arrested a few days before the Monday morning trial got underway. The charge was for carrying a concealed weapon, and threatening Norris Gannon with said weapon. Adding to the charges, on Friday, November 12, Tom Steenbarger filed charges against William for holding him up at gunpoint on the night of May 14, 1913, and stealing Steenbargers .22 caliber pistol. These latter events took place on the east side of Garland Brook cemetery in an area called Lovers Lane (many of my Columbus friends here will remember where Lovers Lane used to be). A search warrant was issued the Friday before. The purpose was to search William Maynards house for Steenbargers .22. A few of Williams friends caught wind of the search warrant. Their intent was to beat the police to Williams house and remove the pistol. The plot failed, however, when the three were detained at the police station shortly before the search got underway. Police Chief Hoffman, officer Truitt, Tom Steenbarger, Martin Nentrup, and William Maynard went to Maynards house. Upon reaching the home, officer Truitt was in the process of reading the warrant to Maynard. They were standing next to a table in a bedroom when Maynard reached underneath a newspaper on the table, located the pistol, and drew it from its holster. Truitt grabbed William, pinning him on the bed. Truitt demanded that William show his hand. Heres your gun, William said. The pistol was identified by Steenbarger as being the one William stole from him. Maynard refused to admit the gun belonged to Steenbarger. On returning to City Hall, R. J. Howe was called and upon arriving, identified the gun by a bill of sale, the gun being sold to Steenbarger some time prior. Ten witnesses were called by the prosecution that Monday morning. Steenbarger testified that on the evening of May 14, 1913, he rode his pony to the Lovers Lane area to take advantage of the moonlit night and let his pony graze on the grass beside the road. When he got ready to leave, he walked over to get his pony when all of a sudden, Walter Butler, William Maynards cousin, and William sprang from the bushes and held him at gunpoint. Seeing there were two of them, Steenbarger dropped his pistol and took off running. Three shots were fired. Two struck a tree next to Steenbarger, and the third was shot at the pony, but missed. John Dahn shared his encounter with Maynard, which occurred several years prior. Dahn was driving a herd of cattle by Maynards home in Maple Grove. Maynard came out of his house, stuck a pistol in his face, and threatened to shoot him and his cows. George Herndon testified he loaned Maynard money about five years prior and had trouble collecting the loan. During one attempt to collect the money, Maynard pulled a pistol and threatened to shoot him. Herndon yanked a picket from the fence and slashed Maynard across the face. Martin Nentrup testified that while riding along Lovers Lane with a female friend of his, she lost her coat. Maynard found it and kept it. When he called at Maynards house to retrieve the coat, he pulled a pistol and threatened to shoot him if he did not leave his property immediately. The coat was never recovered. Elmer Smith testified that, while riding along Lovers Lane one evening, Maynard held him up at gunpoint. Ill post the verdict later this week.
