With a smattering of oak, poplar, and maple scattered in with a sprinkle of big saw toothed aspen, the waterscape was littered with the old growth of the passing season. The rhyolite lined ground was a patch work awash in colors of garnet, apricot, and rust. In her winter best the water had an almost electric blue glow. The birds twilled songs of a beautiful sorrow in anticipation of the coming winter solstice. One of only a handful of our remaining mild days wasnt wasted on the golden garter I spied as I made my way to a higher elevation in search of another view. She scoured the leaf littered ground in search of one last life sustaining meal before the arrival of the approaching cold. Startled by my clumsiness, she raced to hide herself from sight. After a calm conversation, she hesitantly returned to her task. The season now done, the falling leaves provided a cadence to a song of urgency heard only by those who reside in the forest. The song signals the approach of an impending finality but also promises a future renewal. It is a cycle as old as life! The Cycle is a promise--like the legend of the Phoenix: From death--new Life! Winter represents the dying and death of the Phoenix and Spring symbolizes Her rebirth and renewal!
