With summer come Cicadas calling, and the Cicada Killer Wasps that - TopicsExpress

With summer come Cicadas calling, and the Cicada Killer Wasps that prey on them. These are among our largest wasps. They do not eat the cicadas themselves, but sting a cicada, paralyze it, then carry it back to the burrow each individual female wasp makes and buries them there as fresh living food for her young. It takes a great effort for even these huge wasps to fly back to their burrows with the paralyzed cicada. By the way, German Hornets often feed on cicadas as well and are often misidentified as Cicada Killers. They look like giant yellowjackets and are an introduced species.
