Wooo! We had a long day yesterday! With the increase in boats on the water due to lobster mini season we had a huge increase in rescue calls from boaters. The first turtle we were able to rescue was brought in by Ron, Anthony, Mandy, Dora and the other Ron, some Floridians out enjoying the day and doing some diving. While they were out the noticed a 140lbs loggerhead with an old boat strike floating on the surface and not looking so good. The turtle, later named R.C. Hunter, was so lethargic it could hardly lift its head! Luckily the group had eaten their Wheaties that morning and were able to get the huge turtle on the boat and back to Bahia Honda Marina. R.C Hunter is in critical condition but we are optimistic for a recovery. The next rescue came from Krista, Taylor, Ryan and Madison from St. Petersburg, FL. The group was out fishing when a loggerhead hatchling dropped into their boat from a bird!! They were stunned to see the small turtle and immediately checked to see if he was okay. At first the turtle was not moving but after a couple of minutes he sprang back to life! The hatchling is doing great and already back in a tank with the others waiting for a ride back to the Gulf Stream. The final rescue of the day was a late night rescue in Cudjoe Key. Locals Kim and Kevin took their boat out to watch the sunset as they usually do but last night along with the beautiful sunset they were able to save a green turtle from certain death! They noticed the turtle struggling at the surface and gasping for air. As they got closer they noticed a monofilament line wrapped around all four flippers of the turtle and dragging him to the bottom! They were able to scoop up the turtle and immediately it gasped for air! Kimian was indeed a lucky turtle and would not have survived much longer with out help! We want to thank all of our turtle heroes for caring about these awesome creatures and giving them a second chance at life!
