A stroke happens when a blood vessel is blocked or bursts, and blood flow to the brain is stopped. Within a few minutes of a stroke, brain cells begin to die. A stroke can make it hard to walk, talk and even think. The good news is that most stokes can be prevented. The following items you can do to lower your risk of a stroke. 7. Exercise daily! Try for 30 to 60 minutes of exercise on most days. Talk to your doctor before starting a new exercise program. 8. Eat a healthy diet! ·Eat more fruits, vegetables and high-fiber whole grains. ·Limit salt and sodium. Most people should limit sodium to no more than 1,500 mg per day. ·Avoid foods high in saturated fat and cholesterol. Choose skinless poultry, lean meats, fish and low-fat or fat-free dairy products. 9. Get and keep a healthy weight! ·If you are overweight, even a small weight loss will lower your risk for a stroke. ·They best way to take off and keep off extra pounds is to eat a healthy diet and to exercise on most days. KNOW THE SYMPTOMS OF A STROKE!! Stroke symptoms come on suddenly. Damage from a stroke happens fast. Act quickly if you have any of these warning signs: ·Sudden numbness or weakness of face, arm or let – especially on one side of the body. ·Sudden confusion, trouble speaking or understanding. ·Sudden trouble seeing in one or both eyes. ·Sudden dizziness or trouble walking or standing. ·Sudden severe headache with no know cause. The chances of surviving and recovering from a stroke are much higher if a person gets emergency treatment right away. If you have any stroke symptoms, call 911 or your local emergency number right away.
