Yaateeh beautiful people. This is a very terrible act that has happened to our own relatives. It is very hurtful and sad. And many people are upset by what has happened. However, we need to stop and think about our own actions when addressing issues such as this. Violence is a learned behavior, meaning the more a person witnesses or experiences violence at home or in their environment, the more likely they are to become violent themselves. These young men committed a terrible act of violence that only the Creator will handle and take care of. Wishing ill on another human being does not make the problem go away. It only fuels the hate that was initially put into its place. As Dine people, our teachings tell us to be careful and thoughtful when using words towards another human being. Our thoughts and ideas come from a sacred place and our words are carried on the sacred winds the Diyin Dinee breathed into us. Addressing hate (towards others and ones self), racism, abuse, and violence begins by teaching and practicing tolerance, compassion, patience, and love for oneself as well as others. No justice, no return to harmony or balance within each other and ourselves will be accomplished by continuing the cycle of negativity. Nowhere in our Dine ways does it teach us to hate. What it does teach us is to be resilient, to be strong, and disciplined so that we may move forward to take on the challenges we face as individuals and communities with a beautiful, healthy, and positive disposition through K’e. There is a lot of healing that needs to take place within our society (as victims or perpetrators). The wounds we continue to suffer from today also come from a complex history of the colonization of our people. In an NBC News video, a survivor of the attack said They were giggling and laughing at us, mocking, calling us homeless. I said were not even homeless. I said our home is right here, on this land. This is where we are from. I bring attention to this statement because we need to question and understand the systematic destruction of our indigenous societies by the larger society, and how the larger societys dominant structures continue to displace, dispossess, and disempower our people from the land and each other. Its one thing to shed light to an issue constructively and another to be destructive in the process. I have no tolerance for hateful or non-constructive attitudes or behaviors on this fb page. ALL destructive, senseless, and negative remarks will be removed. In the end, we need to respectful to the families affected by this situation as a whole. People are grieving, trying to understand what has happened, and how to move forward so that the healing process can begin. What these families need is our prayers, support, and good thoughts. Not hateful reactions. Ahehee.
