Yep... pretty much what he said. smh.au/comment/hashtag-activism-well-meaning-or-self-promotion-dressed-up-as-charity-20150113-12n29r.html There is genuine cause for concern that proceeding generations will view social media sentiment as a worthy contribution to world affairs. When so much of our lives are online, it seems only logical that click activism will be perceived as a substitute for action, given our time poor lives and our need for instant satisfaction. Most of us give moderately to charitable causes, if at all. Very few will have actually completed missionary work overseas, and most of us have little understanding of the complexity of issues at the heart of geopolitical conflict or acts of terrorism. Membership of political parties is at historic lows, and volunteer work in the community increasingly rare. The hashtag simplifies tragedies into three word banners, providing the masses their vehicle for the appearance of worldly activism. Its a facade. One could argue that the sentiment is nice and the awareness raised is helpful, yet ultimately, if you want to save the world, you need to do more than view it through a computer screen.
