Yes, trans fats are in butter! But do NOT freak out!!!...read on.... So Rhoda had a question this week about whether there are trans fats in butter - and yep, there sure are! As they are in beef - especially grass fed beef! So whats this all about? Arent we meant to be eating grass fed meat and choosing butter over marg? Dont panic - naturally occurring trans fats have a completely different effect on our body compared to industrial trans fats produced during the process of hydrogenation and it all comes back to the chemical structure and good old bonds...oh how I love bonds!! (See, I told you those stick diagrams of Carbon and Hydrogen chains would come in handy!!). While industrial trans fats, like in margarine, are shown to increase the risk of heart disease, cancer, and obesity, naturally occurring trans fats, mostly known as CLA (conjugated linoleic acid) and other trans fats found naturally in animal products are actually thought to DECREASE the risk of those diseases! Check out Chris Kressers article explaining it all and go have a slice of butter!!! chriskresser/can-some-trans-fats-be-healthy
