Yesterday, Chris Heaton-Harris Conservative MP for Daventry gave a House of Commons Speech entitled Cycle Safety & Buses. Chris Heaton-Harris is the MP of Jayne Helliwells family, the cyclist who was killed on Oxford Street in April 2010 just a few hundred metres from where I was hit a few months before. I was kindly alerted to this planned speech a couple of days before and managed to fill Heaton-Harriss inbox with some useful facts and statistics. I never received a response from him (I just assumed he thought I was a nutter!), but Im pleased that the he reads his email. An excerpt from yesterdays speech: Since this debate went on the Order Paper, I have been contacted by various other people and organisations that have either been affected by the issues I am raising or that are campaigning on them. Although one charity has said that it commends the work of Transport for London in trying to learn lessons from the past and improve things, one individual who was put into a coma following a bus collision in 2009 has told me of the fight he has had to get Transport for London to start publishing its casualty data each quarter. This individual’s campaign has led to data being routinely published, following his hard work and that of some Conservative London assembly members. The data show that, on average over the past five years, Transport for London buses have killed or seriously injured a person every day. If you have time, read Goodwills response. Not sure he understood Heaton-Harriss message, but Im glad he at least heard the my FOIA data from an MPs mouth. Progress, even if tiny, is still progress! theyworkforyou/debates/?id=2014-06-25a.437.0
