Yesterday, Diane and I saw The Monuments Men--an outstanding, exciting, adventuresome. well-acted movie from beginning to end that stars George Clooney, Matt Damon, Bill Murray, John Goodman, Cate Blanchett, Jean Dujardin, and Bob Balaban. Clooney also writes and directs this action dramedy. It is a true story of seven men who were only museum directors, curators, and art historians selected by FDR to go behind enemy lines in Europe to steal back stolen paintings, sculpture, and other special art pieces representing one thousand years of culture and to return them to their rightful owners from whom the Nazis had stolen from private and museum collections before Adolph Hitler, who had wanted to use them to establish his own Fuhrers Museum, could destroy them as he planned to do when he saw that he was going to lose World War II. It opens this evening==Thursday, the sixth of March. It had originally been slated to open in December for the 2013 Oscar race, but Clooney needed more time to complete it. I only hope that it will be remembered for the 2014 Oscar race. It is very unusual to see a a picture of this quality released during this time of the year.
