Yesterday I had my dinner in a public space, and so I was forced - TopicsExpress

Yesterday I had my dinner in a public space, and so I was forced to watch World Cup 2014 for the first time. There was a sizeable multi-racial crowd with eyes glued onto the huge flat-screen TV that televised the France versus Nigeria match. Beer mugs brimming with frothy juice, sizzling chunks of nyama-choma, camaraderie and shouts filled the space. The passion of the audience amazed me because I was passionless and bored... No surprises there! One highlight however was the national anthem of France. La Marseillaise! It sent me back down memory lane when I was at Gayaza High School and Miss Hobday trained us to sing and enunciate the French words in this song. Our school choir and French club were among the chosen few that commemorated the anniversary of the French Revolution in Uganda. Theres nothing quite like being taught to sing French words by one with French ancestry. The words of this anthem are as inspiring as they are cut-throat and guttural. No wonder the French are the French! Chorus: Aux armes, citoyens, Formez vos bataillons, Marchons, marchons! Quun sang impur Abreuve nos sillons... I loved, loved, loved the third stanza when I was younger because it spurred on the revolutionaries as it scared those in power. Right now I am feeling inspired thanks to the French national anthem recalled via World Cup!
