Yesterday and Today. Why I love London. At the bus stop in Stratford London. A woman stood waiting like everyone else for the bus. It was a busy interchange with buses, trains etc. The exception to this point is that she was a blind woman, holding a white stick, with her other hand on her belongings, she stood calmingly inline. Like everyone else, when the bus arrived which also happened to be my bus, two bus agents stepped forward to give her priority to get on the bus. They guided her on board and informed the driver of her destination, they helped carry her travel suitcase and other bags onto the bus. She was comforted whilst she took her seat. Disability has not caused her world and mobility to crumble. Today, Baby On Board - This morning during rush hour on the London Underground. The sea of people during rush hour causes trains to be fully packed. A woman stepped on, with a London Underground Badge with the sign Baby On Board, wow, meaning I am pregnant, within seconds a few people seated gave up their seats whilst many others had their head buried in their iPod, phones etc. You might ask what is the big deal? For me it is, In Nigeria I love the people but the cities are not designed to help the independence of those vulnerable, coming from a country where we have little or no respect for women, or blind people, the fact that a city and the city management consider ways of supporting those vulnerable is commendable. Where equality means equality. Also the compassion of total strangers. I asked myself, if it was Lagos motor park, would this lone blind passenger get the priority to board with the support of bus agents? The treatment of a pregnant woman would perhaps have been the same, if people dont blame her for getting pregnant. An exception in Nigeria, we dont announce to the world that we are pregnant by carrying a sign, before the bump is visible. Have a lovely day, and look after each other.
